Northwest Family YMCA

Background

Serving North Nashville and the Bordeaux community for decades, the Northwest Family YMCA has long been a trusted hub for connection, wellness, and youth development. But through community listening sessions beginning in 2017, a clear gap emerged. Residents lacked access to safe, high-quality outdoor recreational spaces. This lack of access was directly tied to broader health disparities and limited opportunities for multigenerational activity.

The Goal

The vision was ambitious: create a destination that would serve everyone—children, teens, adults, and seniors—while removing barriers to access. Through a partnership with the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation, the goal became to design a fully inclusive, outdoor environment that promotes physical activity, social connection, and long-term community health. Just as importantly, the space needed to be open to all residents, regardless of YMCA membership, ensuring equitable access for the entire community.

The Result

The result was the BlueCross Healthy Place at the Northwest Family YMCA. A $6.4 million transformation that redefined what a community space can be. The site now features accessible playgrounds, a splash zone, challenge courses, sports courts, walking paths, adult fitness equipment, and multipurpose fields, all thoughtfully designed to support users of every age and ability.

What was once a traditional facility has become a vibrant, outdoor hub for activity and engagement. Recognized even as a “hidden-gem playground,” the space blends recreation, wellness, and inclusivity in a way that invites entire families to participate together.

The Impact

This transformation represents one of the most significant health and wellness investments the community has seen in decades. Today, the space brings together multiple generations at once resulting in kids playing, adults exercising, and families connecting in ways that weren’t previously possible.

Beyond physical activity, the impact is deeper: it’s about equity, access, and belonging. By removing barriers and creating a free, open-to-all environment, the Northwest Family YMCA has strengthened its role as a cornerstone of the community that supports healthier lifestyles and stronger connections for years to come.

Projects like this demonstrate how thoughtful design, community input, and strong partnerships can transform not just a space, but an entire neighborhood—something IMPACT Parks is uniquely positioned to help bring to life in communities everywhere.
