In its first year, GMC’s Monday Night Football Tour created an exciting new way for the brand to connect with fans. The next phase of the initiative went beyond the stadium, with a larger goal: creating something that would endure long after the final whistle.

That vision led to the creation of the United Way Healthy Kids Zones, a nationwide effort to build play and recreation spaces in cities hosting Monday night games. In total, nine communities across the United States were selected to receive new spaces designed to promote active, healthy lifestyles.

Turning Tight Timelines into Tangible Impact

With each playground set to open in time for game night, the timeline was non-negotiable. Working across multiple cities simultaneously, teams coordinated site evaluations, completed necessary site preparation, and developed custom designs aligned with the initiative’s mission. From there, equipment was produced, shipped, and installed on an accelerated schedule. What made these builds even more meaningful was the hands-on involvement of both players and local community members.

Designed for Play, Built for Growth

The Healthy Kids Zones were intentionally designed to do more than just entertain. Each space encourages children to climb, balance, and move, supporting the development of strength, agility, endurance, and coordination. These environments foster social interaction, confidence, and teamwork. For families, these spaces offer a safe, welcoming place to stay active together.

A Lasting Impact Beyond the Field

Since their completion, the nine play and recreation sites have made a meaningful difference. Helping thousands of children and families stay active through play. The impact extends beyond the playgrounds themselves, as parents and community members who helped build them developed a strong sense of pride and ownership. Their involvement fostered not only new spaces for play but also lasting connections and a shared sense of empowerment.

As Kitty Hsu Dana, Vice President of Health at United Way Worldwide, explains, “the importance of these spaces is clear: experts recommend that young people engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. These playgrounds help make that goal achievable.”

More Than a Moment
